Measuring Seat Height

Measuring your seat hight helps you compare different seats and systems.

How to measure seat height.

Place a straight edge across the coaming above the seat and measure down into the lowest part of the seat bowl, along the centre line.

Remove the seat and measure to the hull.

Subtract one measurement from the other and you have the seat height including any foam and material thickness. You can now compare seats between similar hulled boats.
Boats vary in draft (depth in the water) this can be as much as 35mm between flatter and narrower hull sections. Your seat height and stability are relevant to the water level.

FAQ – Platform Seat

Platform Seat Adjustment

Q. How does my seat adjust?

A. Simply by undoing the 4 thumb nuts and selecting another position.

Platform Seat Pitch

Q. What benefit do I get from pitch change?

A. Changing the seat pitch changes your pelvic tilt, this can reduce lower disc compression (increased pitch)  Gees seats are pitched at 15, helping the paddler to get increased performance as well as comfort. Other manufactures seats are pitched from negative to  five meaning some of the seats are leaning backwards.

Q. How do I change the seat pitch?

A. As for height change but select uneven holes, higher back or front by 1 position. (Not available on lowest setting)

Q. I feel as if I am sitting on the back of my seat.

A. Try changing the seat pitch.  Knees to high so leg drive pushes you over the seat back.  Insufficient push with the upper shoulder resulting in weak body rotation (seek technical help).

Seat Platform
  • K1 Platform
    • £52.80 +
  • K2 Platform
    • £58.60 each

Gees seat platforms are designed with a slide and rear bolt system; the seat is held securely even when the boat is upside down.

The seat adjustment is over 143mm at 7.5mm increments.

Platforms are available from 175mm to 255mm wide for the 147 seats and 215mm to 255mm for the 183 seats. Wider widths are available for larger K2 and K4 kayaks

The choice of platform width is important as the wider the platform the higher the seat. The seat height position is relevant to the water and not the height within the boat. Kayaks vary in draft/displacement by 35mm from the stable racing kayaks to the modern narrow hull sections.

K2 platforms are usually wider and tapered to maintain a level position, custom made for each model of boat and height.

Platforms are easily installed in craft without them (see fitting information).

Helpful hints for installing platforms:

  • Locate platform in front to back position.
  • Level boat then level platform.
  • Apply masking tape to hull around platform glue area.
  • Sand hull to expose fibres and clean surface.
  • Apply masking tape to top edge of platform.
  • Apply glue, work into both surfaces then apply more.
  • Position platform.
  • Place 5kg of weight on the platform to hold it in position, use a flat board along the centre of the platform to spread the weight.
  • Check level.
  • Tidy up glue line.
  • Remove masking tape allow glue to harden over night.

Tiller Bar
  • 210mm wide
    • £17.00
  • 280mm wide
    • £18.70

Tiller Bars are available in two widths: 210mm for racing kayaks and 280mm for touring kayaks.

Made of hardwood with a drilled system for the rudder wire to be in one continuous length, no joints or fittings to go wrong.

For positive steering the rudder wires need to be held at maximum width, achieved by our end drilling system.

A correctly fitted tiller bar can last for over 30years (see fitting below).

    Dimensions, 210 or 280mm wide. Length 350mm x 10mm. Pivot hole for 5mm bolt. Wire holes 3mm.

    Tiller bar fitting

The tiller bar support should hold the bar at the same level as the footrest slot.

The wire feeds should be at the same level as the ends of the tiller bar, if not they will pull the bar up or down in the footrest slot creating unnecessary friction and wear.

When fitted, the tiller bar should move easily from side to side.

Do not over tighten the pivot bolt as the wood will expand in damp conditions, allow 0.5mm gap.
